Archos 704 WiFi reviewed
We've already had our hands on Archos' 704 WiFi "portable" media player, but the thing's also been making the usual rounds, recently landing in PC Magazine's lap for a full review. All in all, they seem to have been pretty impressed with the player, especially by its big and bright 7-inch display and, of course, its titular WiFi capabilities. On the downside, they not surprisingly found the player to be big and heavy, and they were less than impressed with the need for a docking station (sold separately) to do any recording with the unit. That wasn't enough to stop the 704 from snagging a 4 out of 5 rating, however, with PC Mag saying that the player is "worth all of its $550 price."

Toshiba's gigabeat U gets social with FM transmitter
If you're the type to shun audio trend in favor of audio quality then be sure to give a glance in the direction of Toshiba's latest audio player. The new gigabeat U series of music players comes in 1GB (U101) and 2GB (U201) flavors and features Toshiba's new high-quality, 1-bit TC94A82XBG DAC. Otherwise, the most notable feature is the integrated FM receiver/transmitter allowing you record FM broadcasts to MP3 and even share your audio collection with your car audio system or any other DAP equipped with an FM receiver -- pretty much all of them these days. The player sits 11.9-mm thick with a 1.1-inch organic EL display sporting a 96x96 resolution and graphics reminiscent of nascent web interface design. A 20-hour battery and support for Windows Media DRM10, MP3, and WAV (PCM) round out the specs with a full Japanese launch by April 7th -- ¥13,800 ($118) for the 1GB player or ¥16,800 (about $142) for the 2GB model. Not cheap, but not too beaucoup either.
Philips's new DCD778 kitchen iPod media appliance
We can think of better ways to drop four hundred bones than on an overzealous overhead kitchen entertainment unit, but for the food-obsessed that has TVs and iPod docks everywhere else, perhaps Philips's new DCD778 might find a home in your abode. Not just limited to playing tracks from your iPod, the DCD778 can also view DVDs, VCDs, MP3 CDs, and has ATSC / NTSC tuner (we doubt it's high def, but ATSC is certainly the law these days), and AM / FM. Rachel Ray, here we so do not come.
Victor (JVC) DR-HX500 & DR-HX250 Versatile HD Recorders
JVC has introduced a couple of versatile HD video recorders, called the DR-HX500 and DR-HX250. Both models combine a HDD in 500GB capacity or 250GB along with a DVD burner and a VHS recorder. They also feature digital/anolog tuners that allows the recording of 2 programs simultaneously, EPG support, HDMI v1.2a with CEC, S-video and composite outputs, and two remote controls.No release date was announced, but prices (converted from yen) are $890 for the 500Gb model and $710 for the 250Gb model.

Inkel Widetouch 5.6
The only reason the Inkel Widetouch 5.6 is listed here is to show how far the Korean brands have already come. The Widetouch 5.6 has touchscreen controls, a huge 5.6" widescreen LCD display and can receive digital media broadcasts, an asian broadcast format that does not exist in the US (we are stiill struggling with HDTV, which is a compatibility mess over here).
Oh yes, one more thing, the Widetouch 5.6 is also a GPS unit. It is players like this that give some validity to those seemingly bizarre iPod rumors. There is nothing bizarre about a GPS or Bluetooth iPod other than we haven't seen one yet.

Normally we don't throw wearable DAP players on this list for the same reason we rarely include mobile phones, there are just too many such items out there so we try to stay focused. Naturally some devices we simply can't resist.
In this case it's a sneaker and yes, those are built in speakers sewn into the side that will pump your latest theme song for all to hear as you walk down the boulevard. Think Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. You too can strut to the sounds of your own theme music. The Code M can either play music through the speakers or to a wireless headphone. Dada claims a 30 foot radius for the wireless, which means friends with wireless headphones can groove to your tunes too! Wow, this is making me giddy. If that is not enough the shiny silver surface just screams pay attention to me. Hey, it's a safety thing! You want speeding cars and airplanes to be able to see you at night, don't cha?
I am totally entertained by this thing. Just toss a mobile caller into it and you have Maxwell Smart's shoe phone. Don't laugh, the wireless headset can be programmed to take calls from your existing cell phone, so the folks at Dada thought about this. The Dada Code M loads tunes via the USB port (that cable in the photo), which also recharges the device/footwear. The controls are in the tongue of the shoe and Dada claims the Code M will play 6 hours on a single charge. The company says the Code M holds 100 songs, which probably means it holds a very skimpy 256K of memory.
HP TouchSmart IQ800 – Touch Screen PC
HP is in the news today due to the company sacking 24600 staff as part of its integration of Electronic Data Systems. Though it is a tad gloomy over in the HR department, HP came up tops introducing the latest touch screen PC, HP TouchSmart IQ800. The PC has 1920 x 1200 touchscreen, a built-in slot-load Blu-ray player, a TV tuner with remote, integrated webcam, Bluetooth, wall mountable, HP Pocket Media drive bay, and an ambient light to illuminate your keyboard.
RCA Lyra X3000
RCA is the creator and owner of the MP3 codec and released one of the first portable players back in 1999. They were also the first to incorporate MP3 into their lines of stereo receivers, DVD players and other electronic products. Despite the fact that I always could find their MP3-flavored products in the local department store, I rarely see them in the wild.
Fortunately for us the company has not let my observations curtail their activities. Lest we live in an iPod-only world it is good to see the likes of Archos, Creative, iRiver, RCA and even the much maligned Sony keep trying.
The latest batch of RCA units include the Lyra X3000 personal media player. The X3000 uses a 320x240 LCD display, plays MPEG-4 files and can record broadcast programs from the television. The unit sports a 20GB hard drive, small these days for a unit that records and plays back video, and will retail for $399.

The Avid Acutus isn't new, but it's still a sweet-looking turntable. In brief, this is a belt drive, sprung subchassis design with a unique vibration absorbing mechanism. Nokia N96 Review
The Nokia N96 is the flagship of the N-Series following on the heels of it’s older sibling the groundbreaking but troubled N95.
To call the N96 a multimedia computer is hardly an understatement both in features and in price. In fact this mobile does more than some laptops I’ve owned, all in one pocket-sized unit.
This is a genuine tool for today’s high-tech living. Of course it utilises Vodafone’s 3G network and networks across the globe, it is first and foremost a mobile phone, but that’s where the similarity to most others ends. Add to that a 5 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and flash/spotlight– which takes the best pictures and video I have seen from a mobile to date.
With its stunning 2.8” display, built-in 3D stereo speakers and integrated kick-stand for an awesome video experience, the Nokia N96 will have you totally glued to its screen. The N96 is also packaged with a TV-out cable to allow for media consumption on even larger screens. It supports common video formats such as MPEG-4, WMV and Flash.
